Before applying for a grant from The Conrad Prebys Foundation, please read our below guidelines to ensure that your organization meets our requirements.


To be eligible for a grant from The Conrad Prebys Foundation, your organization must be a tax-exempt charitable organization in good standing, as described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.


An organization with an active, grant for operational/programmatic support may apply for a capital campaign grant (and vice-versa). For capital requests, additional documentation is required, including: Campaign budget with income and expense detail, Campaign plan (including fundraising plan), Campaign brochure (if available), and any additional Campaign materials you would like to share (architectural renderings, vendor quotes, etc.).


The Foundation considers submissions from organizations in the following categories: visual & performing arts, higher education & workforce education, youth development, healthcare, and medical research**. Applicants have the ability to self-select the focus area in the Grants Portal that best represents the organization’s mission and work.


The Conrad Prebys Foundation primarily makes grants to organizations located within San Diego, CA. We selectively make grants in other parts of the country, but very rarely approve unsolicited applications from beyond San Diego County.

The Foundation does NOT make grants to: 

  • Individuals

  • Endowments or endowment campaigns

  • Private or family foundations

  • Debt retirement or to cover past operating deficits

  • Unsolicited requests for special event or gala sponsorship

  • Any type of activity intended to support candidates for political office or influence legislation

  • Religious or doctrinal purposes, although faith-based organizations may apply for program support in one of the focus areas



Grants are to be expended as soon as possible and within the agreed-upon funding period, consistent with the budget, schedule, and conditions presented in the proposal. The funds awarded must be used for the purpose outlined in the proposal. If a change in funding purpose or timeline is necessary, this must be communicated to The Foundation prior to any alteration. Such changes must first have The Foundation’s written approval.

The Foundation will consider awarding matching grants. The applicant must select “matching grant” in the online application, and in the narrative should clearly define the purpose, timeline, funding plan and reporting procedure that will provide evidence of matching funds received. Only newly received donations of cash, securities, etc., will qualify as matching contributions. Pledges will not qualify.


Prior to a grant decision, prospective grantees may also be asked to submit supplemental data and/or responses to inquiries from The Foundation. The Foundation team also may request follow-up conversations, site visits, or other opportunities to understand your organization, its mission, and its impact more thoroughly.
